Chapter Four
Mariella focused on her middle child. âWhat do you mean?â
Rafe placed his phone face down on the linen tablecloth. âI was doing some research online.â He threw a pointed look at Luc. âWhile I was not watching entertainment gossip shows.â
âWhat did you find?â Gabe asked, sitting forward.
âThereâs a specialist in Switzerland whoâs had remarkable success with patients whose injuries are similar to Dadâs. Dr. Cedric Aebischer runs a private practice in Zurichâquite busy from what I understand. But I spoke with him directly yesterday while Elana was at one of the fashion houses and explained the situation. His admin assistant just texted that heâs willing to fly to Santa Barbara.â
Mariellaâs heart stammered in her chest. Could this be the lifeline they needed to get Harrison well again? âDios mÃo! Why didnât you say something right away?â
âI wanted to be certain he was willing to work with Dad first.â His brown eyes were gentle as he stared at her. âYouâve had so much to deal with this past month. I didnât want to give you false hope.â
âNice work on locating the doctor,â Luc said, and a lump formed in Mariellaâs throat as her older boy gave his younger brother an approving nod.
âThank you,â Rafe answered.
Mariella opened her mouth to tell Rafe how proud she was of him for not giving up on his father when Ana let out a hysterical sob.
âOh, God, what if it doesnât work? Where will we be then?â she wailed, throwing her hands into the air.
âHistrionics wonât help anyone,â Mariella said quietly, but Ana continued crying.
Mariella sighed as Gabe placed a hand on his motherâs slender shoulder. It grated on Mariellaâs nerves to watch her sister lean into Gabe. Ana didnât deserve comfort from anyone. She wasnât even close to Harrison.
âWhat happens to the company if Harrison doesnât survive?â Ana asked after a few moments. She blinked rapidly and dabbed at her eyes, but Mariella could have sworn her tears were forced. Ana had been able to fake cry like a pro since they were girls.
âHarrison will survive,â Mariella answered in a tone that brooked no argument.
Of course, her sister immediately began to argue. âBut what if he doesnât? Whoâs in charge? Where do the assets go? Does Harrison have a will?â
Mariella had no desire to get into the business of the Fixer with Ana. Thankfully, Gabe spoke before she had to answer.
âMarshall International will continue to operate as it has until Uncle Harrison recovers.â He tugged his hand away from Ana. âYou know this family has always been his prime concern. There are plans in place to protect everyone if the unthinkable happens.â He held up a finger when his mother would have interrupted. âWhich it wonât.â
âIf you say so, darling,â Ana said, her tone saccharine sweet. âThe most important thing is that family sticks together at times like this. Isnât that right, Mariella?â
Mariella felt her eyes narrow as she stared at her sister. Something in Anaâs tone made the words feel ominous.
